Just read about the death of Joe Bologna, who died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 82. He co-wrote the biographical romantic comedy “Made For Each Other” with his wife of 52 years, Renee Taylor. What many people may not know that the couple passed up an expensive wedding at Tavern On The Green for a more economical wedding on a TV soundstage in NYC. Yes, just a few years before a Vicki Budinger married a “Tiptoeing” ukulele player live on the Tonight Show, Bologna and Taylor said their “I Do’s” on… The Merv Griffin Show.
Bologna’s TV career consisted of directing Gillette commercials in the early 60’s and a pair of short-lived shows, the 1960’s set comedy-drama “Rags to Riches” and a even shorter-lived Married: With Children spinoff called “Top of the Heap.” He didn’t quite reach the TV “Heap,” but he did play a “King” in the 1982 live TV-set movie comedy, “My Favorite Year.” Certainly his most favorite years were the 52 he spent with Renee Taylor, which started when Arthur Treacher said, “From New York, it’s The Merv Griffin Show!” And that is no “Bologna.”
